Harry Phillips (judge)

Harry Phillips (July 28, 1909 – August 3, 1985) was a United States federal judge.

Born in Watertown, Tennessee, Phillips received an A.B. from Cumberland University in 1932 and an LL.B. from Cumberland University School of Law in 1933. He was in private practice in Watertown, Tennessee from 1935 to 1937. He was a Member, Tennessee State House of Representatives from 1935 to 1937. He was an Assistant state attorney general of Tennessee from 1937 to 1943. He was in the United States Navy Lieutenant Commander from 1943 to 1946. He was an Assistant state attorney general of Tennessee from 1946 to 1950. He was in private practice in Nashville, Tennessee from 1950 to 1963.

Phillips was a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Phillips was nominated by President John F. Kennedy on June 4, 1963, to a seat vacated by John Donelson Martin, Sr.. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on June 28, 1963, and received his commission on July 3, 1963. He served as chief judge from 1969-1979. He assumed senior status on January 15, 1979. Phillips served in that capacity until August 3, 1985, due to his death.
